Homes get an upgrade with candles & essential oils

How often have you stared at your house and thought, maybe it could use an upgrade? Try adding a scent. Razorpay CEO Harshil Mathur keeps an essential oil diffuser at his desk when he works from home. Nikhil Chopra, CEO, JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, began to use essential oils during the pandemic.SOOTHING SCENTSAyush Baid, founder of home decor brand Ellementry, which saw a 51 per cent increase in candle sales, says, “People look for measures to reduce their anxiety. Candles and essential oils help.” The fourwick rose patchouli, and the mint eucalyptus natural soy wax candles are top-sellers.Good Earth too saw a dramatic rise in sales of their wellness and spa products. A spokesperson revealed that sales of candles grew by 300 per cent.Samarkand — a blend of neroli, lavender, blood orange and cypress — was their most popular essential oil, while exotic black currant was their top-selling candle. 87234128AN ESCAPEAll fragrance categories have seen an uptick during the pandemic, says Rishabh Kothari, president, Fragrances & Flavours Association of India (FAFAI). “Unable to go out of their homes and subjected to negative news, people sought new ways to reclaim calm,” he explains.According to the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, the domestic fragrances and flavours industry is estimated at $500 million. Vineet Arora, co-founder of RAD Living, a Delhi-based candle startup, adds, “With digital fatigue setting in, people need alternate mediums to heal and deal with the burnout of working from home. That’s where candles come in.”Manan Gandhi, founder of Bombay Perfumery, says aroma goes one step further. “It’s evocative. If you are unable to get out of the house, the scent can transport you to your favourite place, a happy memory.”Will the trend continue? Kothari believes so. “If the third wave becomes a reality, aromas that make you feel calm at home are likely to be in demand."
